What’s Happy Birthgiving Day About?
I’d like to tell you about The Happy Birthgiving Day Company.
My name is John, and I’ve been happily married for over 30 years. My wife and I have two grown children.
For decades now, I’ve sent my wife flowers on our kids’ birthdays. Not because I’m a romantic kind of guy, which I am, but because I want to let my wife know how grateful I am for what she gave me–our children. A family. After a few years, I began calling it Happy Birthgiving Day, and it’s become a tradition in our family; and, I would add, the envy of my wife’s friends.
The Tradition
I couldn’t tell you about when the Happy Birthgiving Day tradition began, but the reason for it percolated inside me from the beginning of our family journey. Each year, I watched my wife make sure our babies’ birthdays were special. Meanwhile, I yearned to acknowlege her amazing contribution to our family. “Thank you, honey,” just didn’t seem adequate. She grew and carried my children for nine months, and gave birth to them. Hours and hours of unfathomable pain in the delivery room after not-so-easy pregnancies.
Yeah, I contributed by planting the seeds; but that’s the easy part, right? After that, I was the attentive father-to-be; but, simply put, I was a bystander. From my experience as a father-in-waiting through the pregnancies and in the delivery room, natural birth is not a walk in the park. Not by any means. Throughout her pregnancies and to this day, my wife continues to nurture our kids.
All of that had, and continues to have, a profound impact on me. What she did for me/us is worth celebrating along with our childrens’ birthdays. I figured, we celebrate their birthdays, and their mom’s birthdays, but why not celebrate and acknowledge her role in the process.
That’s why I started calling it Happy Birthgiving Day. Because I’m thankful, grateful and proud of what my wife and the mother of my children did and does for our family every single day.
The Reason
Why did I start The Happy Birthgiving Day Company? Well, it’s about something I mentioned earlier. Each Birthgiving Day, I deliver flowers or some other gift to my wife’s office. From the beginning, her friends and co-workers let her know how fortunate she is. She has a husband who makes a gesture of love and acknowledgment on her kids’ birthdays. While I appreciate their sentiment, it isn’t lost on me that this is an opportunity to create a positive and loving movement for fathers everywhere. So…
